breathe 3

When: Saturday, February 7th 4 – 6pm Workshop/discussion

6-7pm Potluck

Where:  Yoga Wisdom, Cleveland (Warrensville Heights)

Topic: Pranayama – Understanding the basics

Cost:  Free for CLE Yoga Teachers & YTT’s

Instructor:  Shaun Sterling

In this workshop Shaun will show everyone how to discover what type of breather they are and how to shift to diaphragmatic breathing. There are typically 3 types of breathing that people generally do, 2 of which are unhealthy when done regularly. They are clavicular, thoracic/intercostal, and abdominal.

Once this process is understood we will venture off into how to do a complete or full Yogic breath also known as Dirgha Shvasam. This breath alludes most yoga teachers and there is a lack of understanding in how to effectively teach such a full breathing technique.

From there,  the following techniques will be taught:

  • Kapalabhati
  • Bastrika
  • Nadi Shodhana
  • Antara Kumbhaka
  • Bahya Kumbhaka
  • Sahita Kumbhaka

The aim of this workshop is to inform yoga teachers that may have had very little if not any pranayama training in there teacher trainings and previous workshops. Additionally, to iron out any inconsistencies or questions teachers may have that have already established a pranayama practice. Finally, if time permits we will discuss how pranayama is far from a breathing exercise and that it is truly a practice to learn how to control and guide the prana or energy in the koshas.

Notes:

Please inform everyone who is coming that plans on practicing to come on an empty stomach. I’d suggest at least 3-4 hours after there last meal unless it was very light, like a piece of fruit in which case an hour will suffice. We also have to limit this to I’d say 20 tops and 18 is probably the safest bet. Also, inform everyone to bring water and whatever dish they would like. This is not a vegan potluck so I welcome everything.
