New Moon greetings, dear Friends❣️

As the days slowly lengthen and the light begins to return, I find myself stirring from winter’s quiet rhythm. March carries that familiar in-between feeling, with one foot still in winter and the other reaching toward spring.

I am beginning to shake off the quietude of winter’s slumber and feel a bit more energized this month. The weather in March along the Great Lakes tends to be all over the place, with temperature spikes and plunges and the occasional windstorm. Earlier this week, in a single day, the temperature climbed to 70 degrees and then dropped to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind gusts reached 50 mph or more, it snowed, and now we’ve settled back into cooler temperatures for the next few days, then back to warmer temperatures over the weekend.

My body seems to respond accordingly, calling for more rest on cooler days and a more active rhythm on warmer ones. All the while, the shift to daylight saving time adds another layer of confusion to the natural circadian rhythms that align with the rising and setting of the sun. While I’ve maintained a regular sleep schedule according to the clock, my body knows something is off as I try to coax it out of bed an hour and a half before sunrise, and it isn’t quite ready for sleep an hour after the sun sets. Can we just stop this practice already?

What is consistent in March is the increasing light of the sun, gently coaxing all of life from winter’s slumber and back into the warmth of the coming season. Doesn’t the sun feel especially nourishing this time of year?

This Friday marks the March equinox, when day and night are held in perfect balance, and the sun moves into Aries. Aries season marks the beginning of the zodiac and a time when life on Earth begins to renew itself. It is a moment of fresh beginnings for mind, body, and spirit, and a reminder that our work, routines, and activities may also benefit from a more balanced approach as the light grows stronger.

Each year at this time, I remind myself not to rush headlong into the fiery energy of Aries, to avoid burnout long before summer arrives. Instead, I try to follow my body’s cues. When I am tired, I slow down and rest. When I feel energized, I welcome more activity and creative expression. It becomes a practice of balancing both energies, just as the light of the sun invites me to do.
