Episode 12 features two conversations.  The first with Hope Hood, Owner/Teacher of Abide Yoga, and the second with Annie Siegel, Yoga Teacher.  Both will be leading the Abide Yoga 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training.  Also, I’ll lead you through an instantaneous and in the moment technique to calm you in a stressful situation.  It’s called 16 seconds and it’s what is called a “pattern interrupt.”  I learned this technique from the fabulous meditation teacher Davidji.  It’s very useful in situations like your daily driving commute to work or school, long lines while shopping, frustrating conversations, and such.  I’m sure you’ll know exactly when to use it. Thank you and enjoy!

  • Mission and Philosophy of Abide Yoga

    • It’s a small neighborhood studio that holds about 15 mats.  There are more Yin and Restorative classes then Vinyasa.  It’s loosely tied to the film The Big Lebowski and the community is very relaxed.  The names of the classes reflect the of the film.  The space is very relaxing and comfortable.  Every single person is accommodated and welcome.

  • The Big Lebowski’s Dudist Principles

    • Day of the Dude is March 6th

    • The Abide Guide

    • The Dude de Ching

    • Dudist philosophy is about keeping the mind limber and to never get too hung up on what’s going on around you.  The Dude’s methods are a bit dubious but he is the ultimate zen master.

    • This YTT embodies the Dudist philosophy with lots of Yin and Restorative and finding your authentic teaching voice, however there will not be any formal Dudist training

  • This YTT will be Meditation training and learning your own gifts.  There will be lots of alignment instruction, Ayurveda and yogic philosophy.  There will be lots of practice teaching which will start at the beginning of the training.  You’ll learn how to teach on the fly and how to read the room when teaching the class.  Annie stated it’s a very well rounded program that follows the guidelines for the Yoga Alliance.  There is an emphasis on teaching methodology and how to become a good teacher.  Annie was a school teacher and has a MA in Education and she brings that knowledge as an educator to the training.  Annie can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t benefit from this training.

  • Hope is looking forward to teaching this YTT to such a diverse group where they can all learn from each other as well.  There are 12 spots for this training.  Annie loves the receptivity of the Abide community and she looks forward to taking her yoga teaching career to the next level.

  • Hope is excited to teach teachers because they have a real grip on what they need.  It creates a culture of creativity and exploration.  Annie feels that teaching yoga teachers requires a lot of responsibility and she wants to teach new teachers in this YTT about being responsible with the students that show up in their classes.

  • Hope’s mission as a teacher for her to create a space where people can explore what there needs are.  To allow people to create their own practice based on what the needs are and to feel supported with her as the guide

  • In Hope’s classes one can expect to be heard and to be able to approach their practice based on what they need

  • Hope’s practice changes based on current needs.  She is currently working on gaining strength and mental fortitude.  She encourages her students to practice in the same way.

  • Hope’s stress relievers are running, riding her bike, spend time with kids, cooking, going for walks, hanging out with friends and seeing live music

  • Hope’s instant in the moment stress relief is taking a deep breath and aromatherapy

  • Hope’s self care routine includes a daily shower, drinks warm water first thing in the morning, scraps her tongue, oil massage, drinks golden milk at night and makes sure to spend an hour being active every day as a non negotiable.

    • Recipe for Golden Milk from Marissa Mele of Five Prana

      • Ingredients:  1 cup of milk of your choice, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 inch piece fresh ginger thinly sliced, 1 tsp natural sweetener (raw honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, etc), 1/2 virgin coconut oil or ghee, 2 to 4, whole black peppercorns, 1 cinnamon stick.  Garnish with ground cinnamon, cardamom or grated nutmeg.

      • place milk, turmeric powder, ginger, coconut oil or ghee, peppercorns and cinnamon stick into a small saucepan and warm until it’s about to boil, lower heat and simmer for 7 to 10 minutes.  Strain into a mug and garnish and sweeten to taste.

  • Hope’s favorite yoga resource is The Liberated Body podcast with Brooke Thomas and Gill Hedley’s online anatomy videos. WARNING:  Gil Hedley’s videos are of live human cadaver dissections, so just a warning before you check it out!!

  • Hope’s favorite yoga class in Cleveland is Gwen Hashimoto’s Wednesday evening Restorative class at Abide Yoga.  Gwen is trained in Reiki and has a really creative approach to the Restorative practice.

  • Annie’s mission as a yoga teacher is to help people get quiet enough so they can figure out what they need to do to feel balanced.

  • Annie’s classes are unapologetically slow!!  It’s just how she is.  Yet she still has the ability to teach challenging classes as well.  You’ll take your time, get centered, get into a groove, then slow down again.  It’s not a gentle class.

  • Annie’s stress relievers are sighing and breathing (letting go), sitting down and petting and snuggling her pets!!  Exchanging energy and love with her pets.

  • Annie’s self care routine needs improvement she states.  But simply getting up everyday and making healthy choices.

  • Annie’s favorite yoga resource is The Yoga Land podcast with Andrea Ferretti, Meditations from the Mat by Rolf Gates, and YogaGlo.

  • Annie’s favorite class in Cleveland is Hope’s Yin class.

  • In between music is Om Mantra (the cosmic yes) by Deva Primal featuring Manose & Maneesh De Moor

  • Intro & outro music was created by Zen Jenn on Apple loops/Garageband

Thank you listening!!
